Well, the world of projection is certainly a great place to ask uninformed, in order to gain knowledge of the facts. I'll try to keep this guide as simple possible.
Things to look for when buying a projector:
Manufacturer / Brand
There are many projector manufacturers these days that make it look impossible to choose. But to make it simpler, many manufacturers now using parts that are supplied by another manufacturer. Technology

DLP offers better overall picture, but cost much more. So for home users it is better to opt for LCD based projector due to much lower prices and greater availability. Also LCD projector offers excellent image that is comparable to DLP. Larger companies and enterprises geared to the presentation and DLP find a better option.

Color Depth
Color depth states how well it represents the color LCD. The number of colors a monitor or LCD screen is capable show. A good color depth is 16-bits, although 24-Bit is highly recommended, this is the color depth to the panels and projection is highest.
Lamps
An important thing to investigate is the type of light used. Check the price of replacement lamps and life expectancy. I would do no good if you buy a cheap projector and then discovering that each lamp replacement will cost $ 400. New models of the lamp can run for a minimum of 10,000 hours.
Brightness
Brightness is expressed in lumens output. The higher the lumens the better the image is displayed in less than perfect lighting conditions. Some models new projector can display an image full of life, even with the light in succession. 2000 lumens is a good choice for home use. Choose 3000-4000 for theater presentation and jobs that require a bright image in a room not too dark. Lumens rating of less than 2000 as the low-priced 1300 models will to be operated in a completely darkened room (Pitch Black).

Connectivity is a very important factor when choosing a projector. Composite, S-Video and RGB is almost standard in most models. You need to connect your computer RGB or laptop, composite and S-Video to connect DVD players and VCRs. Some newer models have DVI inputs can also be connected to systems of high quality video as a video editor or digital video cameras. One control distance is a necessity that must not wan to leave the comfort of your chair every five minutes. Some applications require two RGB connections for simultaneous display of different video sources, so be sure to check whether you need it.
Long range / short throw projection
It is important to decide where to place the projector. If the projector is to be placed in front of an audience, you will need a short-throw projector. And if you have to set the projector somewhere behind Hearing (Away from the screen) you need a long-throw projector. What happens when you use short throw projector for an audience behind the application is the image is too large to fit on the screen, and if you use a long throw projector for short distances you will get a small image and unclear.
DIY Projectors
Well this is interesting. Did you know that you can build a projector yourself, not that I find it very difficult and will cost a fraction of Retail price? You must have basic knowledge of DIY projects. The image quality is very good that you will not believe. Although a little patience is required to complete the projector.
