Bought a NEC MultiSync MT830 projector on ebay. POWERS OF INTERNAL LCD TURNS ON BUT lamp is off. any ideas?

Most likely: the lamp is bad. A replacement is expensive (approx. $ 450) so you may wish to consider the adoption of the projector to a dealer to have it checked if it is not the lamp.
